How to go on Vacation when Self-Employed

One of the most difficult things about being self-employed is taking a vacation.  It requires much effort to strike a healthy work-life balance.  Many of my clients rely on my fast turn-around time for making changes to their websites, and are frequently adding time-sensitive special offers and the like.

Every year, I manage to take a few long weekends and sometimes an entire week... below are some of my practices for handling such an event:

Harriet Neal, Photographer

"As a photographer, I had special requirements when redesigning  my webpage. I knew that Nate was the person to help me, because I had worked with him before in designing a site for a National organization to which I belong. I was not disappointed! Nate was as professional and prompt as he had been in my previous experience in working with him. He also understood my needs in promoting my images, and has taught me how to upload new images onto my pages. I wish that other people that I deal with had his work ethic and creative sense. Thanks Nate, you made the whole process a good experience for me."

Oneray Transformation

I found it fulfilling to work with Covington Creations, as the ideas and design I had in mind became reality on the website. Nate was able to translate them into working order, and hence we have a website that is easy to navigate and pleasing to the eye. I found it extremely helpful to begin working with a template, and from there we were able to launch into a more expansive, individualized design. The result was that the integration of our ideas and a willingness to be flexible and malleable gave the Oneray website pizzazz and style.

Taking Security Seriously

I want to take a brief moment to write up some important points to consider when dealing with securing digital communications.

Many of these items have come to light after Edward Snowden (bravely) came forward and contradicted what Obama told Leno: “We don’t have a domestic spying program.”  As you are (hopefully) well aware, this is 100% false.

With all of this in mind, I am compiling a list of 4 things that anyone, not just industry-professionals, can do to protect themselves against such spying:

National Docents Symposium Council

I very much enjoyed working with Nate Covington on the redesign of the National Docent Symposium Council website. We are a unique organization and have different needs and Nate was very willing to learn about our organization and how it is structured. In working with him there are three things that stood out:

  1. His reliability. He always answered my email and did what he said he would do. He is quick to post additions to our site.
  2. His willingness to make changes based on our needs, and an honesty to tell me when what I wanted wouldn’t work, and to make suggestions that would work.
  3. His help to me so that I could learn to do some of the posting and make some of the changes. He is also very patient in answering questions, no matter how obvious or trivial.

From beginning to end it was a good experience.
