Have you Googled your Competitors Lately?

google-alerts.pngI've decided to do a bunch of articles on how to use Google to build your business.  And this article is applicable for any business; it doesn't matter if you have a web site or not...

This first article will explain Google Alerts - how it works, how you can use it, and why you should have been doing it months ago.  

Google Alerts is very simple.  On the right, you can see the basic form to get started.  For example, I receive daily alerts for the following search terms:

  • Covington Creations
  • Nate Covington
  • Nathan Covington

The result: Any time Google indexes a web page, blog post, or article containing these keywords, I get an email.  It's a great way to keep tabs on what people are saying about you - good or bad.  Or, use it to keep tabs on your competitors.  Best of all, it's a free service.  This is a great tool that can be integrated with our ongoing web site optimization services.

You can also use it to track usage of your company's name in certain publications. For example if you want to search for your company's name in an article in BusinessWeek you could enter the following: [search term] source:BusinessWeek
